The groundbreaking news that the first family will be planting a vegetable garden right on the White House grounds is AWESOME.
During his campaign Barack Obama planted the seeds of change in our hearts NOW he and his wife are actually putting these seeds in the ground demonstrating and educating us to the power that each of us possesses when we act on our beliefs and values. Not only can we grow vegetables but also ideas, values, ourselves, friendship and love if we nurture and care for them.
Michelle Obama said "We want to use it ( the garden) as a point of education, to talk about health and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet."
“My hope, is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.”
Several past U.S. presidents had vegetable gardens on the White House lawn. Eleanor Roosevelt started a victory garden on the White House lawn in 1943, which encouraged millions to do the same in their own front yards. When WWII ended, home gardeners were producing 40 percent of the United States' produce.
I think we all should consider planting a garden. It can be in a box a pot or a piece of land in our backyard. There is a sense of pride, accomplishment and satisfaction that comes from being a part of growing our food and making it with care. You don't have to have special skills, fancy tools or a green thumb you simply have to remember that ALL THINGS GROW WITH LOVE.
